Diabetes Early Warning Signs

It’s important to diagnose diabetes as early as possible so that treatment can begin as uncontrolled diabetes can lead to kidney disease, cardiovascular problems and eye disorders. Being aware of these diabetes warning signs can help your senior loved one get the diagnosis and treatment plan necessary for good health.

Early Diabetes Symptoms
Many of the early symptoms of diabetes are similar to those symptoms of other conditions. If you notice any of the following in your senior loved one, schedule an appointment with his or her doctor in order to get a proper diagnosis.
- Increased thirst. Excess sugar in the blood prompts the kidneys to remove more fluids, which will cause an increase in thirst.
- Increased urination. The extra fluid removed by the kidneys is formed into the urine. Your loved one may need to use the restroom frequently or may have an occasional nighttime accident.
- Itchy skin and/or dry lips. The excess fluid loss will result in the skin and/or lips becoming parched and dry.
- Increased hunger. The body becomes used to higher blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels dip, even if it’s in a “normal” range, your loved one’s body will respond by sending hunger cues in order to increase blood sugar levels.
- Blurred vision. The changing fluid levels in your loved one’s body will cause the lens of the eyes to swell, resulting in blurred vision.
- Tingling hands or feet. Uncontrolled diabetes damages the nerves in the hands and feet, resulting in a tingling sensation.
